Hailing from the far-eastern suburbs of London, Kickstarter was first conceived in 2009 by guitarist Lee Avant and bassist Ross Graham. Rapper Laurence Ayeni and drummer Eliot Curtis were soon added to the band and Kickstarter was born. Combining sharp spoken word with the nu-metal sound of the 90's and the heavy electro sounds of today, Kickstarter write songs highlighting important issues affecting young people today: racism and violence, stereotyping and prejudice, government failures and social injustice. Their mission is to get these messages across though their songs.
In March 2011, Kickstarter headed to the studio to record their 4-track debut EP entitled 'The Construct City' at Kinman Studios, Ealing. With some genre-busting songs up their sleeves, Kickstarter have become known for their raucous live shows, always breaking the barrier between the stage and the audience, and shattering fourth walls across London’s finest venues, such as The Monto Water Rats, The 229 Venue and The Purple Turtle. With shard-piercing sets that skilfully combine dub-step, drum ‘n’ bass and electro with a raw rock/rap/funk dynamic, Kickstarter create a sharp, focused and energetic band-audience relationship that will never be forgotten.
“They rock as hard as any hard rock bands out there, with a very informed rap/ funk style to get you moving. Singer Laurence Ayeni raps and smiles, he knows the band are kicking up a storm behind him, all he has to do is get you moving and get the Kickstarter message out there. I reckon you need to hear them, one of London’s best young groups. Switch off X Factor, go see these guys instead!”
